Holiday Container Garden Design 101

Hooray! The holidays are almost here! Time to get your front entry and outdoor planters looking festive for the season.

Let’s talk holiday container garden design. We use the “thriller, filler, spiller” design theory. The “thriller” is the one tall plant in the middle that gives the arrangement height. Evergreens are our “thriller” of choice for winter planters, but other good “thriller” options are red or yellow twig dogwood sticks or birch poles. Depending on the size of the planter, some good evergreen options are leland cypress, boxwood, juniper and dwarf alberta spruce. Next comes the “filler” which fills in around the middle of the planter. Our favorite “fillers” for the holidays are pinecones, berries and ornaments. Lastly, come the “spillers” which cascade over the sides of the planter. Fresh evergreen garland or evergreen branches are a great “spiller” for winter. If you use fresh garland or any live evergreen branches make sure to spray them with Wilt-Pruf or another anti-dessicant product when you do the installation and keep them misted with water throughout the holiday season so they don't dry out.

In the picture above, we’ve used leland cypress and boxwood as the thrillers, pinecones and berries as fillers and garland as a spiller. Doesn’t it look festive for the holidays? Once the holidays are over, just remove the pinecones, berries and garland and the evergreen will look great all winter long.

Curb Appeal Shout Out!

Liz Brown, Owner of Mockingbird Manor, got her start in the home decor business by having her own antique booth. She fell in love with finding vintage treasures and decided to create her own store. Mockingbird Manor is located in the heart of OKC and will celebrate 16 years in business this month. Her fabulous store is a collection of new and vintage home decor items where dealers rent space in the two story building. It is a treasure trove of vintage finds mixed with stylish new items.

Liz has an eye for impeccable home decor style and a huge talent for staging a booth, store or any interior space. As the Owner of Mockingbird Manor, she wants the outside of her store to give a good first impression to her customers. "It sets the tone of the store when you walk through the front door. Your storefront absolutely needs to be well taken care of because those details are important. I asked Elizabeth to help with the outdoor planter at the front entrance of my store about 4 years ago. I love working with Elizabeth because of her wonderful customer service. She updates my outdoor planter seasonally and keeps it looking fresh and new."

If you haven't been to Mockingbird Manor, you must! You will discover a wonderful selection of new and used furniture, patio accessories, home decor and other treasures. It's located at 4417 N. Western Avenue. Happy 16th birthday Mockingbird Manor!
