How to Create Character and Colorful Interest with Windowboxes

Windowboxes for the win!

This was a fun project that my husband and I did this earlier this summer. We had recently removed blighted roses from the landscape bed in front of our detached garage. We were left with a blank slate. Our solution? We built, painted and hung faux shutters to the side of the garage and added Gardener's Supply Company Fairfield window boxes underneath the shutters. It added character and color to an otherwise boring space. This is a pic when they were first planted and they have filled in nicely this summer. So happy with the result!

Do you have an exterior wall or fence that needs a needs a little extra something? Why not attach window boxes or wire baskets full of seasonal plants and flowers? Plus, if you're like me and you have no space left in your flowerbeds but can't pass up a good sale on plants, you can always go vertical!

Favorite shady combo

The dog days of summer are upon us friends. The heat has nothing on this plant combo however. The dragon wing begonias, macho fern, white caladium and majesty palm are thriving in this lakeside backyard. I mean, look at those begonia leaves - they are huge and happy. If you don't need the height, you could skip the palm and add more ferns. Serious plant love going on.

Fall Container Gardening Workshops

Fall is just around the corner friends! We have had an unusually cool summer in OKC and for that I am incredibly thankful. However, I'm just about ready for a little change in seasons. A new season means a new round of container gardening workshops too. Last fall the class we held at West Elm was super fun and sold out so we want to offer it again this year. Save the date for Thursday, September 28th at 6pm at West Elm in Classen Curve. Sign up details will be posted on Adorn's facebook and instagram soon so stay tuned.

Let me know if you'd like to visit about hosting a private container gardening workshop with friends. It makes a great team building or girls night out. I'll share the basics of container gardening, my favorite plants and flowers for fall outdoor pots and everyone gets to leave with their own pansy filled pumpkin masterpiece.

Liz Brown, Owner of Mockingbird Manor, got her start in the home decor business by having her own antique booth. She fell in love with finding vintage treasures and decided to create her own store. Mockingbird Manor will celebrate 15 years in business this November. Her fabulous store is a collection of new and vintage home decor items where dealers rent space in the two story building. It is a treasure trove of vintage finds mixed with stylish new items.

Liz has an eye for impeccable home decor style and a huge talent for staging a booth, store or any interior space. As the Owner of Mockingbird Manor, she wants the outside of her store to give a good first impression to her customers. "It sets the tone of the store when you walk through the front door. Your storefront absolutely needs to be well taken care of because those details are important. I asked Elizabeth to help with the outdoor planter at the front entrance of my store about 3 years ago. I love working with Elizabeth because of her wonderful customer service. She updates my outdoor planter seasonally and keeps it looking fresh and new."

If you haven't been to Mockingbird Manor, you must! You will discover a wonderful selection of new and used furniture, patio accessories, home decor and other treasures. It's located at 4417 N. Western Avenue. Happy early 15th birthday Mockingbird Manor!
