<image:title>Blog - Maintenance Tips for Your Summer Container Garden (+ Pollinator-Friendly Flowers)</image:title>
<image:caption>Adorn's tips to maintain beautiful flowers all summer long It's mid-summer and that means your plants are fully established and ready for some maintenance to ensure a gorgeous look for the rest of summer. Pruning your plants - Do some of your plants need a haircut? If you have ever used margarita sweet potato vine in a pot before, you totally know what we're talking about. Typically late June is when we need to give our sweet potato vine plant babies their first haircuts. We don't like this aggressive plant to crowd out the other plants or get too long. It grows like crazy so we end up giving it haircuts twice a month. The purple and variegated types of sweet potato vine don't grow as profusely so we don't have to trim them back as often. Even though the margarita variety needs more maintenance, we still adore it for its pop of chartreuse color and fullness. Other trailing plants that we like to prune if they get too long are dichondra silver falls and licorice plant. Do be careful not to trim off too much all at once. A good rule of thumb is to trim less than 1/3 of the plant. Deadheading your plants - There are some flowers that won't automatically fall off when they die. If you remove the flowers (deadhead) after they are spent they will produce more flowers and look a lot better. Geraniums are one of those types of flowering plants and you should remove the entire stem where the flower grew. Some types of petunias also don't automatically release their flowers. We look for spent petunia flowers that are still clinging on and we remove them when we water daily. It may take a little work but it sure makes the container garden look fresh when you've finished. Fertilization - We add in a slow release fertilizer into the potting soil when we plant but still recommend giving your flowering plants an extra boost during during the last half of summer. We use Jack's Blossom Booster once a week to keep those blooms going strong. It is a water soluble fertilizer that you mix into your watering can and use once every 7 to 14 days. We've had amazing results with this miracle product. Garden pests - It wouldn't be summer without outdoor pests right? Unfortunately sometimes those bugs get into our container gardens so you should get in the habit of checking your plants daily. Be on the lookout for actual bugs that you see on the flowers, underside of leaves or tiny holes in the leaves that the bugs have chewed through. If you detect anything like this it's best to to take action asap before the plants start to fail. We are big fans of an insecticide called Eight which kills over 130 insects. Every year we battle bugs on hibiscus blooms and spraying with Eight a few times a week over two weeks will usually take care of the creepy crawlies. We recommend Neem Oil as a great option for clients who prefer to use an organic product or if you are using it on or near herbs and veggies. If you want a fun way to get young kids interested in gardening, release live ladybugs in your garden. Julie has done this every summer for the last 13 years with her boys. The lady bugs will eat aphids, mealy bugs and other insects. How about that for a fun pest management project for the whole family! Regular watering - If we can leave you with three words of wisdom as we enter into the dog days of summer...WATER YOUR POTS! Seriously. We like to water first thing in the morning so the plants don't bake all day. Sorry to deliver this news, but you may need to water TWICE a day if your plants are in the full sun all day, especially if it is windy since the wind dries out the soil. If your plants are in the shade you may only need to water every other day or once every three days. Just pay attention to them. Are they wilting or getting crispy? If so, that's the plants saying, "More water please!"</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pollinator-friendly annual flowers Let's talk about the birds and the bees...and butterflies! It's so easy to create a pollinator-friendly environment in your yard by including a few nectar and pollen packed plants in your container gardens. Here is a brief list of annual flowers that we use in our container gardens. Alyssum - attracts bees Calibrachoa - attracts hummingbirds Canna - attracts butterflies Dipladenia/Mandevilla - attract hummingbirds and bees (pictured above) Lantana - attracts butterflies Lavender - attracts bees and butterflies Petunia - attracts hummingbirds Zinnia - attracts bees and butterflies By using a few of these in our yards, we are all doing our part to attract and support native birds, butterflies and bees.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Our Favorite Summer Blooms for Your Garden</image:title>
<image:caption>Hooray for summer blooms! You may recall our April newsletter listed our favorite tried and true summer plants we have used for many years in our container garden designs. This season, we have used some new (to us) plants in our container garden installations and have been so pleased with the results. One of Elizabeth's favorite filler/spillers for sunny spots is trailing periwinkle. It starts small but will start to really fill out once the weather warms up. You can see the pink trailing periwinkle in the photo above. We have also planted with the white and purple periwinkle and love them all equally. If you are looking for a pop of pink, purple or white, check out globe amaranth (gomphrena globosa). The gumball shaped flowers are just about the cutest things you have seen. These beauties love full sun. Such a fun filler! We have used several varieties of cordyline this summer and are in LOVE! They are also known as "ti" plants. This is a dramatic thriller with richly colored variegated leaves. Perfect for shady spaces. A Eugenia topiary is such an elegant thriller if you have a sunny spot. It's important to note that they don't like to dry out and they don't last outside in freezing temperatures. Even if won't last all year long, it will look great all summer and fall until frost...and who doesn't love a topiary! Julie and I are testing additional plants and flowers in our own yards this summer and look forward to incorporating them in our container garden designs next year. We'll keep you posted on our faves!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mosquito Repellent Plants We love most everything about summertime, but not those annoying mosquitos. Don't let them ruin your time spent outdoors! Here are a few plants you can add to containers or flower beds to help keep those pesky bugs at bay. Mint - Julie uses mint on her deck to ward off mosquitoes. Many people like to flavor their iced water or tea with mint, but this plant also contains aromatic properties that mosquitoes dislike. Julie suggests planting mint in a container, as it is invasive and will spread like wildfire if planted in a flower bed. Lavender - Julie planted loads of perennial lavender because mosquitos don't like the scent of the plant due to its natural essential oils. Marigolds - Most people who grow vegetables tend to plant marigolds amongst the veggies, and for good reason. These magical flowers help banish many types of insects including mosquitoes. Lantana - This annual flower (pictured above) is another great choice, since mosquitoes dislike bright and vibrant colors. The scent of the flowers helps to ward off the little buggers. Lantana is extremely heat and drought tolerant and is an excellent filler/spiller in containers. Lemon balm - This perennial has a great lemon scent that wards off mosquitoes effectively. Lemon balm grows quickly in moist and well-drained soil and likes to be watered at least once a day. Rub the leaves with your fingers - this will be your new favorite if you love the smell of lemon! Make sure to plant this in a container because this is another fast spreader. Other plants to use to ward off mosquitos are citronella, rosemary and basil. Hopefully using a few of these plants in your yard will do the trick in keeping mosquitos at bay.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Our Favorite Summer Blooms for Your Garden</image:title>
<image:caption>Edible Container Gardens One of our favorite things to do in the summer is to grow our own herbs. We use them when we cook and to create some fun seasonal cocktails. Basil is a fantastic herb to grow in an outdoor pot. We harvest it a few times during the summer to make fresh pesto and then freeze the rest to enjoy during the winter months. As the basil grows you will want to remove the flowering part at the top of the basil stems. This means it is going to seed. You want the basil to keep its energy on creating big leaves and not spend its energy going to seed. Simply snip off the flowering part when you see it grow at the tops of the stems. In the picture above we planted the basil in the middle since it will get the tallest. We added parsley, chives, sage, oregano, rosemary and mint as fillers and spillers around the basil. We used Berger organic potting mix and organic fertilizer. We love to grill out during the summer months and what goes with anything and everything on a grill? Fresh corn! We have discovered a great recipe online from Allrecipes that includes nearly all the herbs in this container in one recipe. Check out the link to discover this deliciousness: Grilled Herbed Corn on the Cob. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do! We'll be posting some of our favorite summer sips and snacks concocted with our herbs on our social media over the next few months, so stay tuned!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Curb Appeal Shout Out! Julie recently had the pleasure of working with the owner of Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ to create an inviting outdoor look for her new restaurant in Overland Park, KS. They were starting from scratch with no planters at all. The first step was for Julie to consult with the owner on how many planters, style and size of planters and placement of planters. Next, Julie ordered 9 planters from one of our favorite planter suppliers, Crescent Gardens. Lastly, Julie created an outdoor oasis to welcome the patrons of this wonderful restaurant. And don't miss the 6 huge rectangular planters on the outdoor patio. The flower-filled outdoor pots soften the space, offer privacy for the diners from the parking lot and and have a fun tropical vibe. We highly recommend eating at Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ! It is such a fun experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Container Gardens are More Than Eye Candy</image:title>
<image:caption>Container Gardens are more than eye candy Container gardens not only add beauty and improve curb appeal, they also add privacy and can serve as a focal point. Above is an example of using a container as a focal point. This flower-filled bird bath is smack dab in the center of our parents' kitchen garden. It is placed in the middle of bricks that wind through the small garden. We love how it adds interest and height to the setting. You can also use a container garden as a privacy screen. Many outdoor cafes use outdoor pots as a beautiful buffer to a sidewalk or parking lot. Homeowners can use outdoor planters to hide pool equipment or any other utilitarian items. Lovely and practical, yes please! P. S. - Isn't Smitty the cutest dad ever?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Container Gardens are More Than Eye Candy</image:title>
<image:caption>Texture in Container Garden Design Texture... you think about it with fabric…but have you thought about it with plants? Plant leaves come in a million different sizes and shapes. Grasses, asparagus fern and cacti among others have spiky leaves. There are smooth and shiny leaves on a croton, ruffled leaves of a cabbage or kale and furry leaves on dusty miller. Broad leaves on a sweet potato vine plant and small leaves on moneywort. Truly, the options are endless. In order to have balance with the plants in the container, we always try to have a mixture of at least three different leaf textures. Plant texture is just one of those things most people don’t pay attention to, but when you get it right, wow! Check out the textures in the picture above. In the pot on the left, the dracaena spike leaves are long and thin and the moneywort has small round leaves. The middle planter has sedum as a spiller, which is short and spiky. The planter on the right contains hibiscus with large leaves and vinca major with medium oval leaves. The different textures add so much interest to these planters!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Container Gardens are More Than Eye Candy</image:title>
<image:caption>Color in your outdoor planters Let's talk color! Filling an empty container is like an artist beginning with a blank palette. Lots of opportunity for creativity and making it fit your space and personality. We absolutely love using lots of different colors in the container gardens we create, and we don’t mean just the colors on the flowers. We're talking about the leaves on the plants themselves. Plants fall into these color categories: chartreuse, purple/red, silver/blue and kelly green. We also consider a variegated leaf it's own "color". It is sometimes a challenge, but we try to mix at least two of these colors into one container. It adds so much interest to the entire arrangement! Take a look at the picture above and you will see the kelly green color of the boxwood and scaevola leaves, chartreuse color in the sweet potato vine, and purple color in the purple heart. Do give some thought to the color of your container when you are selecting the colors of your plants. If you have a light colored container, you may consider a dark spiller (like purple sweet potato vine or purple heart) and if you have a dark colored container, you may want to go with a spiller color that will pop (like chartreuse sweet potato vine or moneywort). Same goes for the background to the container, which is typically the color of your home or business. If it is a dark background, I would suggest using a bright thriller plant that will show up against the dark and vice versa, if you have a light colored background, you may want to use a dark thriller plant so you can see it from the street and it doesn't blend into the wall behind it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 2020 Garden Trends: What You Need to Know</image:title>
<image:caption>Garden Trends for 2020 Julie and I attended Digging In Gathering in January. It is a continuing education opportunity for container gardeners to come together and learn from experts in horticulture. We have attended this annual conference for the last 3 years and have forged many friendships with fellow container gardeners from all over the country. This conference is the brainchild of Andrea Gaspar, who owns Contained Gardens. We are thankful to be a part of this community. The education we receive allows us to better serve our clients by being on the front end of garden trends and current plant knowledge. We were able to visit Costa Farms Trial Gardens in Miami, FL and view new varieties of plants, as shown in this picture. Every year, their research and development team plants more than 500 different varieties of annuals and perennials in the trial garden - many so new they are not going to be in stores for another couple of years. They work with plant breeders from around the world. The trial garden offers an excellent opportunity to evaluate plants for high temperature, heavy rain, and humidity tolerance. Plants that demonstrate success in the summer trial garden will survive just about anywhere! The trial garden covers nearly two acres and includes around 40 row beds with annuals and perennials, hanging basket and mixed container trials, and designed landscape trials. We were in awe at the abundance of gorgeous flowers and plants. We plan to use many in our designs this summer - particularly dwarf cannas and colorful coleus varieties. Our conference was in Miami, which is home to most of the tropical plant industry in the US. We were treated to private tours at a few tropical plant growers. The Jungle Nursery, is a grower and wholesale supplier of interior and exterior tropical plants. We visited their greenhouses in Homestead, FL and learned about many tropical plants; we can't wait to use these in our container garden designs this summer. We are excited to incorporate the different varieties of cordyline and dracaena. We also toured the greenhouses of Bullis Bromeliads, a bromeliad grower and wholesale supplier in Homestead, FL, where we learned so much about all the different bromeliad plants available. Bromeliads would make a lush addition as a filler in a planter that gets morning sun. During one of our breakout sessions, we had the opportunity to learn from Marianne Wilburn, a talented gardener and accomplished garden columnist. She spoke to our group about which tropicals are best for container gardens. So informative! You can learn more about her work on her website, Small Town Gardener. One of our fabulous colleagues, Danielle, Owner of The Mustard Seed Market in Blowing Rock, NC, had recently returned from the AmericasMart in Atlanta and filled us in on all the outdoor living trends. What's hot: white and grey planters, planters with a barnacle texture, using baskets as planters, and outdoor rugs. Colors that we will see a lot of in 2020 are Pantone classic blue, pink, black and white, grey, celadon and beige. Floral patterns and texture will be big for 2020. Attending AmericasMart is on our bucket list! We spent a day at the Tropical Plant International Expo (TPIE) in Tampa and visited all the trade show booths to learn about the newest products for our industry. We stopped by the trade show booth of The Magnolia Company and now have a wonderful source for freshly cut magnolia leaves for holiday planters. We met representatives of Moss Man, a wholesale moss supplier, and have already received our moss shipment for spring planters. We visited with our friends at Smart Pots, a company based out of Oklahoma City, which also happens to be owned by friends of Elizabeth. They sell fabric planters through garden centers all over the country, including Family Tree Nursery and Suburban Lawn & Garden in the Kansas City area and TLC Garden Center and Marcum's Nursery in Oklahoma City. We are particularly intrigued by Smart Pots' new "NoCoco Liners" for wire hanging baskets. We are planning to have a custom window box liner made in this fabric for a client. "NoCoco Liners" hold up better than coconut coir liners and will last for approximately 4-5 years. We can't wait to bring these beautiful new-to-market plants, tropicals and garden accessories to our clients this summer.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our favorite garden tools Julie and I are both obsessed with the Hori Hori garden knife and potting scoop. The knife can cut through the toughest roots in an outdoor pot without any problem. The serrated edges also can open bags of mulch or soil if you don't have scissors handy. We love the potting scoop because you can add new soil quickly to a planter since the scoop is so large. We are big fans of nitrile gardening gloves from Gardeners Supply Company. They are not bulky and you can pop them in the washing machine. When we go onsite to plant, we load all these items into a Gardeners Supply Company 7 gallon tubtrug. We have these tubtrugs in every color. We usually bring at least 3 of these when we plant and use the empty ones for the old plants that we are removing from the planters. Do yourself a favor and buy these tried and true tools for the spring planting season! You won't be sorry!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 2020 Garden Trends: What You Need to Know</image:title>
<image:caption>Hooray for spring flowers and cold weather crops Raise your hand if you are ready for a pop of color! If you're like us and can't wait to dig in the dirt, we've listed below some of our favorite cold hardy flowers and crops that you can plant early spring. The weather in Oklahoma City is almost warm enough to plant early spring flowers - yay! (OKC falls into Zone 7a on the USDA Plant Hardiness Map.) Elizabeth will start planting her favorite cold tolerant flowers mid-March - snapdragons, lobularia (commonly referred to as alyssum) and petunias. These flowers are all in the above picture - the snapdragons are in the back, the alyssum on the left and the petunias on the right. These pretties are not as cold hardy as pansies, but they can tolerate a light freeze. Kansas City is quite a bit colder than Oklahoma City (USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5b), so we are sorry to report it will be a few weeks until you are able to dig in the dirt. Julie is planning to use alyssum, hellebores, snapdragons, pansies and violas in her container gardens this spring. As far as cold weather crops go, your options are cilantro, lettuces, dill, spinach, strawberries, kale and broccoli. These can all be easily planted in a container; you can put several into one pot. If you are ever in doubt as far as selecting plants and when to plant them, we highly recommend chatting up the knowledgeable people who work at your local garden center. They can tell you when it is time to plant without risk of a freeze. Our favorite retail garden centers in OKC are TLC Garden Center and Precure Nursery & Garden Center and in KC our faves are Family Tree Nursery and Suburban Lawn & Garden.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Holiday Container Garden Design 101 for Zone 7 (that's you Oklahoma City!) Hooray! The holidays are almost here! Time to get your front entry and outdoor planters looking festive for the season. Below, Elizabeth is sharing her favorite holiday design ideas that work well in OKC and other parts of the country where it is warm enough in the winter for an evergreen to survive in a planter all winter long. Let’s talk holiday container garden design. We use the “thriller, filler, spiller” design theory. The “thriller” is the one tall plant in the middle that gives the arrangement height. A live evergreen is our “thriller” of choice for winter planters. Other good “thriller” options, in addition to the evergreen, are red twig dogwood sticks and birch poles. Depending on the size of the planter, some other good evergreen options are leland cypress, boxwood, juniper and dwarf alberta spruce. Next comes the “filler” which fills in around the middle of the planter. Our favorite “fillers” for the holidays are pinecones, berries and ornaments. Lastly, come the “spillers” which cascade over the sides of the planter. You could use one gallon evergreen shrubs that have a trailing habit (like pacific blue juniper or blue rug juniper), fresh evergreen garland or cut evergreen branches as “spillers”. Our favorite cut evergreen branch is incense cedar because it looks good long after the holidays are over. If you use fresh garland or any cut evergreen branches make sure to spray them with Wilt-Pruf or another anti-dessicant product when you do the installation and keep them misted with water on a weekly basis throughout the holiday season so they don't dry out. In the picture above, we’ve used a boxwood as the thriller, pinecones and berries as fillers and blue rug juniper as the spillers. Doesn’t it look festive for the holidays? Once the holidays are over, just remove the pinecones, berries and garland and the evergreens will look great all winter long.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Holiday Container Garden Design 101 for Zone 6 (Kansas City this is you!) Look at this gorgeousness that Julie created last winter! Since it is a lot colder in Kansas City, she will be using spruce tops as the thrillers instead of live evergreen shrubs. Her favorite fillers are pine cones, berries and various evergreen branches (princess pine, noble fir or silver tip fir). Julie likes to use an evergreen garland as the spiller and / or incense or coned cedar.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Curb Appeal Shout Out! When you own a fabulous boutique, are a mom to 2 busy girls AND you are a super active community volunteer, you don't have time to do your own outdoor planters. We are delighted to help Katherine create welcoming curb appeal through container gardens at her clothing store, Gretta Sloane. Katherine has owned Gretta Sloane for 4 years and her favorite thing about owning the store is the people. "I thrive on meeting new people and chatting it up with friends. I cherish each encounter I have with one of the "Gretta Girls" (all the great girls who work for me), a new customer, a Saturday regular or Dee, our post woman. These relationships are what makes doing this job never feel like I'm doing a job. We love Adorn for many reasons. First, I kill every plant I ever buy or plant. So I've decided to leave all planting up to the professionals. Second, the first impression someone has of the store is from the front, whether they are stopping in for something special, browsing after a trip to Organic Squeeze, on their morning walk to Starbucks with the dogs or parking to get their hair done. We want everyone who encounters Gretta Sloane to feel welcome and comfortable even before they walk in. Adorn helps us do that. Finally, we use Adorn because Elizabeth is a joy to work with. She makes it easy for me. She contacts me at the beginning of every season with a timeframe and ideas. I don't have to lift a finger. We love Adorn!" Katherine has such an eye for fashion! Check out her store in Nichols Hills Plaza for fab clothes, shoes and accessories for every season. www.grettasloane.com</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Fall Container Garden Ideas (+ Our Favorite Plants)</image:title>
<image:caption>Our favorite plants for fall Hooray! Fall is almost here! Time to start thinking, planning, scheming and dreaming about getting your front porch or storefront looking festive for the season. So...what are our favorite thrillers, fillers and spillers for fall planters? Colorful crotons and ornamental grasses are our thrillers of choice. Next comes the fillers, which fill in around the middle of the planter. Our favorite fillers for fall are pansies, cabbage, kale and pumpkins. What? Pumpkins? You bet! Just pop some pie pumpkins or mini-pumpkins right into the pot. So festive! Lastly, comes the spiller, which cascades over the sides of the planter. Our go-to spiller for fall is bright green moneywort (aka creeping jenny). In the picture above, we used a croton as the thriller. There are lots of fillers going on here – cabbage, small pumpkins and bittersweet stems. Moneywort finishes out the design as the spiller. Doesn’t it look festive for fall?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Curb Appeal Shout Out! WE LOVE ALEX and her fabulous store, The MakeUp Bar. This store has been THE place to buy make up and skin care products in OKC since 2001. They also offer a full array of aesthetic treatments (We can vouch for their amazing facials). If you need any beauty products for a male or female loved one … run don’t walk to The MakeUp Bar. Alex and her team will hook you up! We’ve been digging in the dirt at The MakeUp Bar and Alex's home for 6 years. Alex says it best when asked about why she reached out to Adorn. "Oh Lordy, anybody who knows me, knows I can't keep a plastic plant from turning yellow. So when I saw an instagram post about Adorn, I immediately called and inquired! After talking to Elizabeth I felt like she really heard what I was saying and that I needed low maintenance. After she was done with my pots at home they looked so incredible I had her do the pots at The MakeUp Bar. I couldn't stop singing her praises and telling all my friends and clients about her. Adorn is a luxury and sometimes I have to really budget it in, but it is a treat that keeps on giving every time I walk in at home or at work! I will always use and recommend Adorn." Awwww thank you Alex! We love you too!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Plant haircuts, watering and garden pests ... OH MY! Plant haircut? If you have ever used margarita sweet potato vine in a pot before, you totally know what we're talking about. Typically late June is when we need to give our sweet potato vine plant babies their first haircuts. We don't like this aggressive plant to crowd out the filler plants or get too long. It grows like crazy so we end up giving it many haircuts before the end of summer. The purple and variegated types of sweet potato vine don't grow as profusely so we don't have to trim them back as often. Even though the margarita variety needs more maintenance, we still adore it for its pop of chartreuse color and fullness. It wouldn't be summer without outdoor pests right? Unfortunately sometimes those bugs get into our container gardens. We are big fans of an insecticide called Eight which kills over 130 insects. Every year we battle bugs on hibiscus blooms and spraying with Eight a few times a week over two weeks will usually take care of the creepy crawlies. We recommend Natria Insecticidal Soap by Bayer Advanced as a great option for clients who prefer to use an organic product or if you are using it on or near herbs and veggies. If we can leave you with three words of wisdom as we enter into the dog days of summer...WATER YOUR POTS!

<image:title>Blog - Edible Container Gardens, How to Control Garden Pests & More</image:title>
In the picture above we've added flat leaf parsley, curly leaf parsley, chives, sage, oregano and lemon thyme as fillers and spillers around the basil. In the pot to the right of the mixed herb planter, we used only mint. Mint is super invasive so planting it in a container is definitely the way to go unless you want it to spread ALL over your flower beds.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Edible Container Gardens, How to Control Garden Pests & More</image:title>
<image:caption>New (to us) favorite plants for summer Julie and I love to experiment with new plants at our own homes and if we like how they perform we'll plant them for clients. This season we are loving the soiree periwinkle (pictured here). This is a beautiful spiller/filler that flowers non-stop and loves the heat and sun. No need to dead head so they are super low maintenance. We have used plumbago only a few times over the past few years for clients who want a pop of blue. Julie has this beauty in her front planters now and it is a show stopper. Gorgeous large, light blue blooms that resemble small hydrangea blooms. There aren't many blue flowers so this one is extra special for that reason. Proven Winners came out with a new type of petunia a few years ago called Supertunia Vista. These are heat tolerant and don't require deadheading. They come in five colors but the pink bubblegum is our fave because we love pink! If you need a thriller for a sunny or partially sunny area, try horsetail reed grass. It is a fast grower and very invasive, so this is best for containers and not in flower beds. It would make a great privacy screen if grown in a trough. Just make sure to water it regularly. Another fun thriller for a sunny or partially sunny area is papyrus. We've used this a few times in the past and love its whimsical look. No need to deadhead, super easy to maintain.</image:caption>

During their initial meeting, Dr. Vargas told Julie she wanted planters with simple, clean lines.Together they decided on four gorgeous zinc footed estate planters from Restoration Hardware (two for the front entrance and two for the back entrance). <image:caption>Cheers to the red, white and blue! One of our favorite holidays, the 4th of July, is right around the corner. Whether you are hosting a gathering of friends and family to celebrate this important day for our nation or just want to show some patriotic spirit, here a few super easy tips to get your outdoor space looking festive. Flags, flags and more flags! Nothing says "Happy 4th" more than our beloved American flag waving in the breeze. You can find flags in all different sizes to use in outdoor planters of all shapes and sizes. We are big fans of tucking in lots of mini-flags into the sides of our pots. We'll let you in on a little secret. We're obsessed with flag bunting! The bunting in this picture is 3 feet wide and 1.5 feet long - the perfect size for many windows. But wait, there's more. Don't stop with flags and bunting...throw some red, white and blue pillows on your front porch bench and outdoor furniture. Now you're set! It's so easy right? You even have time to whip up the mother of all 4th of July desserts, the patriotic classic...FLAG CAKE! Happy 4th friends!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Mosquito Repelling Plants, Experimenting with Color & More</image:title>
<image:caption>Mosquito repelling plants Have you noticed an increase of mosquitos with all the rain we've received? Ugh! Don't let them ruin your time spent outdoors! Here are a few plants you can add to containers or flower beds to help keep those pesky bugs at bay. Mint - Julie uses the herb, mint, on her deck to ward off the mosquitoes. Many people like to flavor their iced water or tea with mint, but this plant also contains aromatic properties that mosquitoes dislike. Crush the leaves and release the scent or just plant them outside and never worry about mosquitoes biting you again. Lantana - This annual flower is another great choice, since mosquitoes dislike bright and vibrant colors. The scent of the flowers helps to ward off the little buggers. Julie uses them in container as spillers. Lantana is extremely heat and drought tolerant. Lastly, the perennial, lemon balm’s scent wards off mosquitoes effectively. Lemon balm grows quickly in moist and well-drained soil and likes to be watered at least once a day. Rub the leaves with your fingers - if you love the smell of lemon then this will be your new favorite!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Coordinated color combinations One of our favorite things about container garden design is the challenge of finding the right mix of colors and textures to put in a container. If you are planting a trio of containers like in this picture or planting containers that are near each other, you will want to coordinate the colors. Here we went with the red and yellow theme. Red leaf begonias are the flowers used in all three and visually ties them together. The yellow pops are hibiscus in the large planter and lantana in the medium sized planter. We love how the three containers blend well together but aren't totally matchy-matchy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Curb appeal shout out! We've been helping Tammy Cole, Owner of Bella Salon in Edmond, with her outdoor planter for years. This fabulous salon is in a darling house on Broadway and 4th Street in Downtown Edmond. Hearing comments from sweet clients like Tammy makes our day. "I love using Adorn! Elizabeth is very creative and uses some unusual things that I would never even think to use in a planter. It looks great year round even in the winter months when my pot would normally be empty. I love the convenience of knowing that it is the one thing I don't have to think about and can check off my to do list. Elizabeth is always there once a month to make sure our salon looks fresh and green." Awww, thanks Tammy for letting us "adorn" the entrance to your salon. We appreciate your love of curb appeal!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Add Herbs to Your Outdoor Planters</image:title>
<image:caption>Bring on the summer herbs! One of our favorite things to do in the summer is to grow our own herbs. We use them when we cook and to create some fun seasonal cocktails. Basil is a fantastic herb to grow in an outdoor pot. We harvest it a few times a year to make fresh pesto and then freeze the rest to enjoy during the winter months. Here is our favorite recipe for basil pesto, straight out of The Joy of Cooking. This recipe makes one cup of pesto. Combine in a food processor and process to a rough paste: 2 cups loosely packed basil leaves 1⁄2 cup grated Parmesan 1⁄3 cup pine nuts 2 medium garlic cloves, peeled With the machine running, slowly add: 1⁄2 cup olive oil, or as needed If the pesto seems dry (it should be a thick paste), add a little more olive oil. Season to taste with: Salt and black pepper Pour your desired amount of pesto on top of warm pasta or spaghetti squash and you have a delicious dish. If you're freezing it, pour the pesto in an ice cube tray, cover and freeze. Once frozen, put the frozen pesto cubes into a freezer zip-lock bag and re-freeze until you are ready to use them. Enjoy the taste of summer all year long!</image:caption>

<image:caption>New (to us) plant alert We are constantly on the lookout for new plants and flowers to try. We just recently used an allamanda as the thriller for this sunny container. It sure looks like a yellow mandevilla doesn't it? We love this tropical, flowering bush and can't wait to use it more often next summer. The yellow flower is just so cheery! We paired it with red leaf begonias, wandering jew and purple sweet potato vine. All these plants love heat and sun - winners!</image:caption>

Elizabeth is always there once a month to make sure our salon looks fresh and green."</image:caption>

<image:caption>Curb Appeal Shout Out! We've been helping April Campbell, Owner of Central Park Dog Daycare, with her outdoor pots for over three years. We are delighted that April contacted us for help and are so thankful to be able to fulfill a need in the community. We love helping with the curb appeal for Central Park Dog Daycare (plus we get to play with the cute dogs as they go in and out of daycare - big bonus!). We really appreciate April's comments below. "For a few years we tried to keep our pots planted and fresh. We quickly found that we couldn't keep them rotated for each season and we often chose the wrong types of plants and flowers which of course resulted in dead/ugly plants! We finally just gave up and left the pots empty year round. I saw a Facebook post about Adorn and I knew this was exactly what our front entrance needed! Elizabeth has been so kind and helpful! She has kept our pots looking AMAZING year round. We constantly get compliments from our clients about how great our flowers look." We highly recommend Central Park Dog Daycare for your pups! April and her team take great care of the dogs who spend the day there (and their people). They have really cute dog leashes and collars too. They are located at 5720 N. Classen Boulevard in OKC. Do your dogs a favor and check it out!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Holiday Planter Bling These last few weeks the Adorn elves have been busy spreading holiday cheer to front porches and store fronts all over KC and OKC. We are in the holiday spirit and wanted to share some of our favorite decorating ideas with you to get your outdoor planters ready for the season. In the picture above we started with a boxwood in each planter and then added festive holiday décor to create our finished look. Our go-to holiday décor for pots is red berries, pine cones and fresh greenery…it’s looking pretty festive right? Round gold and silver ornaments in various sizes and textures are also a fun addition to planters if you want a more elegant look. If you have a wreath or other door decoration you can use coordinating decor as filler in your pots to tie it all together for a cohesive holiday look. We love fresh evergreen garland! It smells SO good and is SO lush! One of our favorite things is to encircle the top of a planter with it. Word of warning though if using fresh greenery, the downside is that it dries out over time. We recommend spraying the greens with an anti-desiccant product like Wilt-Pruf so the needles will stay on longer and spraying the greenery with water 3 times a week so it stays fresh. It's so beautiful and festive, it's worth the extra effort to keep it pretty, trust us!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Holiday Outdoor Styling Remember the Portlandia “Put a Bird On It” episode? Well, grab yourself 25’ of fresh evergreen garland and put that stuff everywhere! Drape some fresh garland around your mail box and outdoor bench. Add some red pillows and tie an evergreen sprig and pinecone to them with a pretty ribbon. You can secure the garland and pillows with clear fishing line so it doesn’t all blow away in the wind or you can tie a ribbon around it. If you have black lanterns put ornaments or pine cones inside of them and add an evergreen sprig, pine cone and ribbon to the top of each lantern. Speaking of ribbon, we are loving buffalo check ribbon this season. We have used it on our bench pillows, lanterns and wreaths to keep a consistent look. Of course, fresh evergreen wreaths are the perfect welcoming touch for your front door.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Curb Appeal Shout Out! WE LOVE ALEX! Her fabulous store, The MakeUp Bar, has been THE place to buy make up and skin care products in OKC since 2001. They also offer a full array of aesthetic treatments (We can vouch for their amazing facials). If you need any beauty products for a male or female loved one … run don’t walk to The MakeUp Bar. Alex and her team will hook you up! We’ve been digging in the dirt at The MakeUp Bar and Alex's home for 4 years. I will always use and recommend Elizabeth and Adorn." Awwww thank you Alex! We love you too! And we love all our friends of Adorn! We thank you all for your interest in container gardening and outdoor decor. We wish you a wonderful holiday season! Cheers! Elizabeth & Julie</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Holiday Container Garden Design 101</image:title>
<image:caption>Holiday Container GARDEN Design 101 Hooray! The holidays are almost here! Time to get your front entry and outdoor planters looking festive for the season. Let’s talk holiday container garden design. We use the “thriller, filler, spiller” design theory. The “thriller” is the one tall plant in the middle that gives the arrangement height. Evergreens are our “thriller” of choice for winter planters, but other good “thriller” options are red or yellow twig dogwood sticks or birch poles. Depending on the size of the planter, some good evergreen options are leland cypress, boxwood, juniper and dwarf alberta spruce. Next comes the “filler” which fills in around the middle of the planter. Our favorite “fillers” for the holidays are pinecones, berries and ornaments. Lastly, come the “spillers” which cascade over the sides of the planter. Great “spiller” options for winter are english ivy, vinca minor and/or fresh evergreen garland. If you use fresh garland or any live evergreen branches make sure to spray them with Wilt-Pruf when you do the installation and keep them misted with water throughout the holiday season so they don't dry out. In the picture above, we’ve used 2 leland cypress and boxwood as the thrillers, pinecones and berries as fillers and ivy and garland as spillers. Doesn’t it look festive for the holidays? Once the holidays are over, just remove the pinecones, berries and garland and the evergreen and english ivy will look great all winter long.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Curb Appeal Shout Out! Imagine our delight when we got the call last April from Kristine Bates, an incredible interior designer in OKC, to lend her a hand with her outdoor planters. Her amazing home was going to be on the Nichols Hills Garden Tour and her outdoor pots needed a fresh new look for the summer season. Kristine loves what outdoor planters can add to a back patio. "Outdoor pots, especially when they are professionally done, can add so much to an outdoor living space. Our covered back patio is an extension of our home and our family spends time there daily. All our living room and kitchen windows look out onto our back patio so we really need our outdoor planters to look fantastic. As a designer, it's important for our house to look "finished" on the inside and out. It's nice to be able to outsource the container gardens to Adorn because I know they will look wonderful all season long. Elizabeth has helped with our planters now for two seasons - summer and fall. I highly recommend her to my clients too." We LOVE digging in the dirt at her beautiful home! Kristine's firm, Kristine Bates Interiors, does everything from updating to designing complete house plans starting from the ground up to final completion. She is SO talented and we are thankful for the opportunity to work with her and her team on a seasonal basis.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Texture Matters in Container Gardening</image:title>
<image:caption>Texture in container garden design Texture... you think about it with fabric…but have you thought about it with plants? Plant leaves come in a million different sizes and shapes. Grasses, asparagus fern and cacti among others have spiky leaves. There are smooth and shiny leaves on a croton, ruffled leaves of a cabbage or kale and furry leaves on dusty miller. Broad leaves on a sweet potato vine plant and small leaves on moneywort. Truly, the options are endless. In order to have balance with the plants in the container, I always try to have a mixture of at least 3 different leaf textures. Plant texture is just one of those things most people don’t pay attention to, but when you get it right, wow! Check out the 4 textures in the picture above. The palm fronds are long and thin, the ferns are delicate, the impatiens have mid-sized leaves, the purple sweet potato vine has large leaves and the wire vine leaves are tiny. Lots going on in this planter for sure!</image:caption>

<image:caption>LOVE THIS PLANT! Need a thriller for a shady spot? You must try caladium. It comes in many different color combinations - reds, pinks, greens and whites. I happen to love the white and green combo in the picture above. Pair it with moneywort, impatiens and asparagus fern and you have a beautiful container garden that's made for the shade.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Curb appeal shout out! I've been helping Tammy Cole, Owner of Bella Salon in Edmond, with her outdoor planter for a few years. This fabulous salon is in a darling house on Broadway and 4th street in Downtown Edmond. Hearing comments from sweet clients like Tammy makes my day. "I love using Adorn! Elizabeth is very creative and uses some unusual things that I would never even think to use in a planter. It looks great year round even in the winter months when my pot would normally be empty. I love the convenience of knowing that it is the one thing I don't have to think about and can check off my to do list. Elizabeth is always there once a month to make sure our salon looks fresh and green."</image:caption>

<image:caption>It's all about the curb appeal So, what's the big deal about container gardening anyway and why do I love it? Three words: INSTANT CURB APPEAL. Container gardening is an easy, inexpensive way to create an attractive, welcoming first impression for your home or business. Custom containers gardens that match your style and personality will wow your friends and customers and offer beauty and a pop of color. And we all know the old saying, you don't get a second chance to make a first impression.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Seasonal decor in pots - why not? I don't know about you, but I really miss COLOR in my outdoor planters. Why not add some cute, colorful Valentines decor to brighten things up? I added some sweet red hearts to my window box and it's pretty festive. By the time Easter rolls around, it will be warm enough for flowers to survive in our outdoor pots, but you can always add some Easter decor too. My favorite seasons to add decor are fall and Christmas. I love adding pumpkins to my pots in the fall, sadly sometimes the squirrels love it also. Fun decor options for holiday pots are pinecones, berries, red twig dogwood sticks and ornaments. Be creative and have fun with it!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Curb appeal shout out! Morgan, the fabulous Owner of Green Bambino, contacted me over a year ago asking for help with outdoor pots at her store. Initially she needed new pots so I helped her find two planters that were just the right size and shape for her store front. I change out the plants and flowers on a seasonal basis and visit monthly to make sure they always look their best. Morgan recently shared this with me, which warmed my heart. "Having you take care of this has taken a load off my plate and makes me smile every time I go past the planters." Morgan understands that her customers' experience begins before they even enter her store. I so appreciate her love of curb appeal. Green Bambino is OKC's #1 natural parenting resource, providing parents in our community with simple, affordable, responsible resources they need to be more thoughtful in their parenting and family lifestyle. They have a great selection selection of sustainable & eco-friendly products. The store is a hub for expert parenting education and natural-living information and a welcoming space for support, encouragement and community engagement. They are located at 5120 N. Shartel Avenue and can be reached at 405-848-2330 and www.green-bambino.com. Green Bambino is a locally owned store and an asset to our community, go see Morgan and support small business.</image:caption>
